Apple is reportedly experimenting with red as the next signature colour for its upcoming Pro iPhones. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, “red is the new flagship colour in testing for the next iPhone Pros.”
While the iPhone 18 Pro is not expected to debut until later this year, internal testing of finishes typically begins months in advance. Gurman also noted chatter around purple and brown shades, though these may simply represent variations or undertones of the same red concept rather than entirely separate options.
A shift from subtle to statement
Apple’s Pro models have traditionally leaned towards restrained palettes such as graphite, silver and muted titanium finishes. A vivid red would mark a notable departure.
The move may be strategic. Recent buzz around the so-called “Cosmic Orange” finish on current Pro models — informally dubbed Hermès orange by fans — has reportedly boosted appeal in China. Bold colours are increasingly seen as status markers in certain markets, particularly when paired with premium hardware.
Red, in particular, carries strong cultural resonance in China, symbolising luck and prosperity. A flagship red Pro model could therefore be as much a market play as an aesthetic choice.
Not Apple’s first red iPhone
Apple has previously offered red iPhones through its long-running partnership with Product Red. Recent examples included the iPhone SE, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, all in deep red finishes tied to charitable initiatives.
However, those versions were typically available on standard models rather than the Pro tier. If red becomes the headline colour for the Pro lineup, it would represent a repositioning of bold finishes at the very top of Apple’s portfolio.
Interestingly, Gurman suggests Apple will take a far more conservative approach with its rumoured foldable iPhone, sticking to traditional tones for that device.
